Welcome to Brijwasi Ayurveda, your trusted source for holistic health and wellness. In this article, we will explore the pathya (recommended) and apathya (to be avoided) aspects of managing Prameh, commonly known as Diabetes.


Do's - Ahara (Diet):

To regulate blood sugar levels and promote overall well-being, we recommend incorporating the following food items into your diet:

- Use of Purana Dhanya (grains harvested 1 year back) and Bharjit Dhanya (roasted grains).

- Yava (Barley), Mudga (Green grams), Kulattha (Horse grams), Adhaki, Masura (Lentils), and Makushtha are highly recommended.

- Include bitter leafy vegetables like fenugreek, Atasi (Flaxseed), and Sarshapa (mustard) in your meals.

- Opt for roasted meat of dry habitat animals for non-vegetarian options.


Cereals:

- Yava (Barley) (Hordeum vulgare)

- Godhuma (wheat)

- Kodrava (grain variety – Paspolum scrobiculatum)

- Uddalaka (according to Dhanvantari Nighantu, forest variety of kodrava)

- Kangu (Seteria italica)

- Madhulika (Elusine coracana)

- Shyamaka (Echinochloea frumentacea)

- Jurnahva (Sorghum vulgare)

- Vajranna (Pennisatum typhoides)

- Purana shali (old rice)


Pulses:

- Adhaki (red gram - Cajanus cajan)

- Kulattha (horse gram) and Mudga (green gram)

- Masura (Lentils)

- Makushtha (Moth Bean/Acpnite bean)

- Chanaka (Cicer arietinum) should be taken with bitter and astringent leafy vegetables.


Vegetables:

- Navapatola (young Tricosanthus dioica)

- Young vegetable varieties of banana

- Tanduleyaka (Amaranthus spinosus)

- Vastukam (bathuva)

- All bitter vegetables (tiktasakam) like methika (Fenugreek leaves), Karavellaka (Bitter gourd), Bimbi (Kovai), Shigru fruits and leaves (Drum stick)

- Vrintaka (Brinjal)

- Rakta vrintaka (Tomato)

- Putiha (mint leaves)

- Suran (Amorphophallus)

- Curry leaves

- Mulaka (radish)

- Kushmanda (Ash Gourd)

- Kritavedhana (Ridge gourd)

- Alabu (Bottle gourd)


Fruits:

- Jambu (Syzigium cumini)

- Kapitha (Feronia limonia)

- Amlaki (Phyllanthus emblica)

- Bilva (Bael - Aegle marmelos)

- Dadima (Pomegranate - Punica granatum)

- Naranga (Orange - Citrus aurantium)

- Parushaka (Falsa - Gravia asiatica)

- Udumbara (Cluster Fig – Ficus racemosa) and other fruits can be included in moderation.


Oils and Condiments:

- Atasi (Linum usitatissimum)

- Sarshapa (mustard)

- Haridra (Turmeric)

- Maricha (Pepper)

- Tvak (Cinnamon)

- Lashuna (Garlic)

- Shunthi (Ginger)

- Methika (Fenugreek)

- Dhanyaka (Coriander)

- Jeeraka (Cumin seeds)


Vihara (Lifestyle):

In addition to a balanced diet, incorporating the following activities into your daily routine can greatly benefit your overall health and diabetes management:

- Long walks, swimming, and engaging in activities that involve muscular activity.

- Weight training exercises can also be beneficial.

- Ensure that exercise is initiated at low intensity and gradually increased over time.

- Avoid exercising immediately after heavy meals.

- Follow a consistent exercise schedule at fixed timings.

- Prioritize proper sleep and ensure your meals are digested before exercising.


Don'ts - Ahara (Diet):

To effectively manage Prameh, it is important to avoid certain food items. Here are some to steer clear of:

- Excessive consumption of sweets, fruit salad, sugarcane, and fruits with high glycemic index such as Mango, Watermelon, Chikoo, Dates, Jackfruits, Custard apple, Banana, Grapes, and Cashew nuts.

- Avoid cold drinks and the intake of oil, hydrogenated ghee, and fried foods.

- Limit your consumption of wetland animals' meat.

- Avoid consuming food before the previous meal has been completely digested.

- Maintain a regular eating schedule and avoid varying your meal quantities.
